How to wash your jeans?

Uncle Francky's advice

Here's Uncle Francky's column, which answers your current questions: how to wash your jeans ? Wash them inside out, inside out? Should you machine wash your jeans? At what temperature? Here are his tips on washing your jeans.

How do I wash my jeans?

Here's how to do it. First, avoid washing your jeans too often. However, if you have no choice, here's a list of important points:

  1. Unroll the cuffs if there are any, otherwise they will be marked.
  2. Favor short wash cycles such as 30 minutes maximum.
  3. Do not exceed 40°C (30°C or cold is sufficient).
  4. Do not overload your drum: 2 or 3 pairs of jeans maximum, otherwise you risk having marks (veins, breaks) on your jeans.
  5. Turn your jeans inside out if you want to keep them clean and dark, leave them right side out if you want to accentuate their patina.
  6. Dry them flat on a clothesline, or in the dryer if your jeans have become too big (or you're in too much of a hurry, but be careful of shrinkage).

Ah, the trick with vinegar or salt in the bathtub to fix the color, it doesn't work 😉!

How do I rinse my jeans?

Rinsing is usually included in the machine wash cycle. However, in some cases, you can simply rinse instead of the full cycle. You can rinse your jeans by hand to really preserve them, before drying them on a clothesline. This is where you're getting closer to being a purist.

    Should you iron your jeans?

Personally, I don't recommend ironing jeans. By their very nature, jeans are a rather casual garment and should have some relief . Manufacturers have gone to great lengths to give them a 3D look with volume. If you dry them on a clothesline or in a tumble dryer, they will have just the right look to be put on straight away. If you really insist on ironing, only iron the flat parts, especially not the seams. Please, don't turn your jeans into crepe, otherwise there's no point in wearing them!
